Hints & tips

Images

Images are a great way of keeping your website looking fresh and interesting. Follow our simple tips to providing the best images on your website.

Overview

It's our job to make things look good. It's what we do, day in, day out! However, we understand that not everyone can get high resolution photos and edit them to look amazing on screen.

So firstly, if you ever need us to undertake some image retouching, on-site photo shoots or board photography, etc., just ask!

Image resolution and sizing

All digital photos are made up of pixels. A digital camera or phone will normally take photos that are upwards of 2,000 pixels wide. To put this in perspective a typical website will be designed to a maximum of 1,170 pixels wide.

Therefore if you upload a photo directly from a digital camera or phone it will almost double the width of the website. So, before you upload an image you will need to resize it to be more suitable for a website.

In most cases photos that are 640 x 480 pixels will be suitable in terms of quality against size.

Concrete5 image editing

Concrete5 has an in-built image editor which is useful in some situations but rather limited in functionality.

You can resize and rotate images by going to the File Manager, left clicking the image and choosing Edit.

Finding large files

If you're nearing your hosting limit you may want to check if you have accidentally uploaded large file sizes (images/PDFs, etc.). By removing them, or replacing them with smaller compressed files you can reduce your hosting file size.

To do this visit the File Manager and click the "Size" column heading. This will order all of your files by file size.

The larger files can then be downloaded, compressed and uploaded again using the "Replace" feature.
